She was an Advisor to the Marbled Murrelet Recovery Team (1992-1997) and is currently a Member of the Inland Effectiveness Monitoring Team of the Northwest Forest Plan, and a member of the North American Colonial Waterbird Conservation Plan. Kim is also actively involved in the American Bird Conservancy's "Cat Indoors!" program.
Specialty: Current research focus is on the behavior, ecology, and habitat associations of Marbled Murrelets in Oregon, California, and Alaska. In Oregon, projects have included tree climbing to look for active nests, characterizing nest sites, determining optimal habitat based on reproductive success, and modeling and mapping murrelet habitat associations. In California, she has looked at habitat associations, the effects of anthropogenic disturbance, and predator abundance. In southeast Alaska, projects included determining foraging ranges, inland attendance patterns, and habitat use of radio-marked individuals.
Research Interests: Ecology and habitat associations of seabirds, specifically Brachyramphus murrelets; forest-wildlife interactions; using information on habitat associations to better manage bird populations. Kim is also interested in the ecology of Kittlitz's and Long-billed Murrelets, other Pacific seabirds and their habitats, the factors associated with nest predation, and management of older-aged forests for birds and other wildlife. She has searched for Long-billed Murrelets on Hokkaido, Japan and written a summary of their status and conservation in Asia. She hopes to begin research on this species in Russia in the near future.
