Two internships are required to graduate: Exploratory for 1-2 credits and Intensive for 3-6 credits. Most students do an Exploratory Internship to figure out what they want to do for their Intensive Internship.
Exploratory Internship helps you explore career directions
It involves a professional experience of at least 40 hours of learning time in an off-campus natural resource setting. Most students attend a professional conference, such as the Oregon Annual Conference of The Wildlife Society or American Fisheries Society or assist a professional biologist with field work.
Intensive Internship helps you experience work as a professional and
gain technical skills that complement the academic/conceptual knowledge you learn in classes
It involves a professional experience in an off-campus natural resource organization for a long enough time period and with enough depth and breadth that you gain competence in one or more facets of a position or organization, thoroughly learning practices and procedures to the point where you often perform professional duties independent of supervision.
Credit values are determined by the amount of learning time associated with the Internship, as agreed to by the student, internship organization and RebeccaGoggans. Most Exploratory Internships are 1 credit and most Intensive Internships are 3 credits.
All Internships must be approved by Rebecca Goggans prior to starting the internship.
Each student must complete an Internship Training Agreement Form and have it signed by their off-campus supervisor and Rebecca Goggans prior to starting the internship.
Each student must register for FW 410 Internship and complete the Syllabus assignments to receive a grade.
PROCESS FOR MEETING INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Meet with Rebecca to discuss career goals and internship ideas. Most students, even Freshmen, meet with Rebecca during their first or second quarter on campus and continue to meet periodically. She can help you figure out what is the best work experience for you as you progress academically and professionally.
Explore the current Internship List posted in the Nash Hallway near the student lounge and conduct a search of various Internship websites to find positions that interest you; discuss options with Rebecca. She often has an inside “track” on a position or knows more about it than is apparent in the announcement.
Apply for Internship positions. Most positions will require that you apply with a resume and cover letter. See Resume Writing for FW Students for tips on resume preparation. Rebecca will review and critique your resume.
If offered an Internship, verify with Rebecca that it will be approved for credit, prior to accepting the position.
Complete Internship Training Form and send it to your off-campus internship supervisor for a signature, then return it to Rebecca for a signature, prior to starting your internship.
Get Syllabus from Rebecca; complete and turn in all assignments while you are doing the internship.
Register for FW 410 Internship within 3 quarters of completing the internship.
