What is the point of the Exploratory Internship? The intent is for each student to be exposed to areas that interest them so that they can narrow their academic and professional interest. Many students do several short-term volunteer experiences/internships including attending a professional meeting about fish or wildlife.
What is the point of the Intensive Internship Requirement? The intent is for each student to gain the type of experience needed to make them employable in their area of interest when they graduate.
How do I find out about internship opportunities?
Rebecca compiles a list of Internships on a periodic basis; this list is sent to the undergrad listserv (fw-undergrads) and is posted on the bulletin board in Nash near the Student Lounge. You can also research web sites (see attached list) and network with faculty, students and professionals.
Can a student find and select an internship that is not on Rebecca’s list? Yes, but it must be approved by Rebecca.
Can a student be paid while getting Internship credit?Yes, in fact most of our students receive some compensation during their Intensive Internship. Many seasonal jobs can be used for the Intensive Internship requirement.
Do I have to skip a quarter of classes to complete my Intensive Internship? No, however many students do choose to work full time to complete the Intensive Internship requirement. This internship is a key component of your marketability when you graduate.
Do I have to register for credit the same quarter I am doing internship? No, but you have to complete and turn in all of the Syllabus requirements in the quarter you are doing the internship. Your work will be graded and the grade posted to your transcript when you register for the class. You must register for the class within 3 quarters of doing the internship.
Can I do more than one Exploratory Internship? Yes, but you may only want to pay for the 1-credit required. Rebecca will continue to work with you to help you gain professional exposure even if you are not doing it for credit.
Can I do more than one Intensive Internship? Yes, but you may only want to pay for the 3 required credits. Rebecca will continue to work with you to help you gain professional work experience even if you are not doing it for credit.
How do I get credit for attending a professional conference?
If you attend the Annual Conference of The Wildlife Society http://fw.oregonstate.edu/tws/ or American Fisheries Society http://www.orafs.org/ , you may register for FW 410 Wildlife Society or FW 410 Fisheries Society; contact the listed Instructor to get more information. If you are interested in attendinganother professional conference, contact Rebecca to have it approved for credit, then register for FW 410 Internship.
Are their sources of funding to help me survive while I participate in an unfunded or low-funded internship? Yes, the FW Dept and the College of Ag Sciences has “scholarships” to support student interns. In addition, Rebecca may know about other sources of financial support.
Can Freshmen and Sophomores do Internships? Yes, in fact we encourage you start gaining professional experience as early as possible. The more experience you have, the more you know what you do and don’t like, and the more likely you are to get the perfect job when you graduate.
