Welcome to the
Game Bird Program Website!
The Game Bird Program at
Oregon State University was created in 1973 by Dr. John A. Crawford,
a Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife.
In the nearly 30 years of this program, the Game Bird Program has been
involved in research in the Pacific Northwest on ruffed, blue, sage
and sharp-tailed grouse, mountain and California quail, pheasants, Rio
Grande and Merriam turkeys. The primary focus of the Game Bird Program
is to further the understanding of habitat relationships of upland game
birds. Dr. Crawford has had over 35 graduate students including 8 PhD
level students. Currently, the Game Bird Research Program is investigating
the comparative ecology of blue and ruffed grouse in sympatric ranges
of western Oregon, continuing an on-going 15 year effort to understand
habitat relationships and reproductive biology of sage grouse in southeast
Oregon and is completing ground-breaking research on mountain quail
ecology in southwest and northeast Oregon.
