POPDY AND ECOSCI: A POPULATION AND ECOSYSTEM SCIENCE WORKSHOP
JUNE 16-28 2019 AT OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) seeks a diverse workforce of quantitative scientists to accomplish the agency’s mission of sustainable use of marine resources. Changing climate and increasing pressures on coastal ecosystems present a critical need for scientists that apply quantitative skills to conservation and management of marine resources, which includes data collection and analysis, interpretation, modeling, and prediction. In some cases, the tools and analyses needed for assessment and evaluation are complex; in other cases, creativity and innovation lead to novel approaches that utilize relatively simple math, programming, and statistics. We will introduce a diverse group of participants to a range of quantitative tools that are applied in population and ecosystem science. We will accomplish this through hands-on experiences with a variety of data collection and analysis methods used in managing our living marine resources.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
"PopDy and EcoSci" will be an all expenses paid, 2-week workshop for undergraduates and newly graduated Bachelor's degree recipients. This intensive learning workshop will include computer labs, data collection and analysis, field trips, demonstrations and lectures from academic and agency scientists, and meetings with fishermen and other coastal residents to learn about the value of good science in coastal resource decision-making. A networking session will also be included to help participants identify career paths and opportunities for graduate school to join the growing movement toward ecosystem-based management and sustainability.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Activities include data analysis and computer modeling, data collection at sea and at the dock, censusing marine mammals and seabirds, tours of oceanographic research vessels, meetings with fishermen and management agency personnel, and more.

Students must attend the entire 2-week program.
COST
All expenses paid for chosen participants.
This includes transportation to Oregon, field trips, and room and board.
ELIGIBILITY
Any undergraduate or recently graduated student (pre-grad school) with an interest in ocean resources, marine conservation, and the quantitative tools used to inform marine resource management is encouraged to apply. Students should have had some coursework in college-level algebra, introductory calculus and/or statistics, and computer programming, but we do not expect students to have an extensive background in quantitative methods - just an interest in them!
The goal of this program is to introduce students from many different backgrounds to the applications of math and computer science to sustainable management of our oceans. We are seeking students with an interest in quantitative sciences, but not necessarily a lot of experience or coursework! Students of color and diverse life experience are encouraged to apply.

Applications are due by 5PM PDT on March 1, 2019. We will schedule interviews via Skype in mid-March, and finalists will be notified by April 15.
Students will be selected based on their indicated interest in the program and in quantitative sciences, their academic record to date, recommendation letters, and their potential to contribute to a diverse and interactive classroom.
