AFRICAN ELEPHANT (SAVANNA)

African Elephant

Clinton W. Epps

Latin name: Loxodonta africana

Although African elephants have dispersal abilities that exceed most other terrestrial mammals, conserving elephant movement corridors may effectively preserve habitat and potential landscape linkages for other large mammal species among Tanzanian reserves. We studied distribution of elephants within and among protected areas in Tanzania, and use gene flow estimates to contrast present-day patterns with historical linkages among populations. This work was used in a wildlife corridor management plan developed by Tanzania in 2011 that described and prioritized known movement corridors for a variety of large terrestrial mammals.
