A unique vertebrate, Mangrove rivulus are an internally self-fertilizing hermaphroditic species. Field and laboratory studies are have been conducted to determine development, details of internal fertilization, sex change, and their environmental physiology. This information was used to establish them as a model species for laboratory studies, and to confirm conservation status in Florida.
