Walleye pollock supports the largest single-species fishery in the world, with most of the harvest coming from the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. The majority of walleye pollock is processed to make surimi, most commonly used in the United States to make artificial crab meat. In a project involving scientists and students from Oregon State University, University of Alaska, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, we are examining how elevated CO2 levels associated with ocean acidification affects the feeding, growth, and survival of larvae and juveniles and how these effects will combine with food web alterations to influence long-term outlooks for the fisheries.
