WESTERN SPOTTED SKUNK

Western spotted skunk

Marie Tosa

Latin name: Spilogale gracilis

In the Pacific Northwest forests, there is essentially no scientific research on the western spotted skunk, despite being one of the most abundant carnivores. This small forest carnivore is nocturnal and extremely elusive. By studying the western spotted skunk at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, we are trying to understand diet, habitat requirements, predation pressures, and the effects of logging on their populations. We hope this research will inform conservation of other threatened small carnivores in the Pacific Northwest and the eastern spotted skunk.
